Poster Children “Dynamite Chair”

Had to do it sooner or later so why not now?  First song on the album that kicked my life to a different path, Poster Children‘s “Dynamite Chair” is one of the few cheerful tunes on the uncharacteristically sad and angry Tool of the Man LP, and the pseudo-scatterbrained lyrics have lifted my spirits since I latched onto this record as a high school junior.  It’s the recorded debut of the Valentin brothers’ twin-guitar attack, and Rick’s lead is uniquely loose and joyful.  I remember reading Dave Davies’ solos on the early Kinks singles described as “lively” in a way that hadn’t been heard to that point, and that’s maybe the best comparison.  Better yet, listen to the song and point me to some other examples!

As Free Week begins here in Austin, this song’s giddiness is as infectious as ever: “I’m going to scrape the sky tonight and shake down all the stars.”
