Uncle Tupelo “Effigy”

This excellent cover of Creedence Clearwater Revival’s “Effigy” came on in the car today and it hit a little harder in the wake of the assassination attempt on Arizona Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords on Saturday, an attack that left six dead and 14 wounded.  According to a childhood friend of the alleged shooter, the motivation seems to be a highly personal one, taking offense that Giffords wouldn’t directly answer his logical puzzle: “What is government if words have no meaning?”  Still, there has been an alarming string of political violence over the past two years.  Most of those incidents were committed by unstable men with close ties to organizations or ideologies on the paranoid right, and “paranoid” seems to be the operative word, as in “paranoid schizophrenic,” as in “crazy.”  It’s hard times we’re living in, time to think about exactly what effect all these dead effigies have on people who are already barely hanging to conventional reality.
