Baby Huey “Hard Times”

01/22/2011

Curtis Mayfield wrote this song and it appears in his stripped-down icy funk style on There’s No Place Like America Today, but Baby Huey owns this one.  He was by all accounts a man who used his 300+ pounds and enormous voice to best effect on stage, and the live banter on The Living Legend compilation backs that up.  Unfortunately, Baby Huey had a big-time relationship with heroin as well, and he died in 1970 of a heart attack at 26 years old, over 400 pounds at that point.  The mix of heavy soul and psychedelia he and his band produced was absolutely fantastic, and I highly recommend tracking it down.
