The Fire Show “Who Do You Love?”

This oft-covered song has plenty of threatening lyrical imagery, but I doubt the accompanying music has ever been better matched than on The Fire Show‘s debut album.  Bo Diddley’s original swinging rock beat and George Thorogood’s application of the more-famous “Bo Diddley beat” are both thrown in the ditch for a skeletal beat and droning punk guitars.  The tempo slowed to a crawl, singer M. Resplendent’s nasal whine somehow adds to the menace of classic lines like “I got a brand-new house on the roadside, made of rattlesnake hide.”

I don’t think The Fire Show fared as well with “You Are My Sunshine” from their last album Saint The Fire Show, but this is how I like cover songs and remixes…radically redone, especially when the original is so well-known.
